I'm in about three fandoms where the principle method of understanding what's going on is fansubs - and there are some conflicting views, shall we say, on how that should be done, whether it should be a localisation, or a completely straight, literal translation.
The latter seems to be a viewpoint espoused by people who don't understand that a literal translation from Japanese leaves you with something very strange indeed, because it's a very different culture. Recently, there was a fandom argument on this. The line "There is no alternate way to translate. It's a car running on a straight line. Raw speed and performance," was used.
To demonstrate how much I disagree with this, meet Kijima Kani.
