Legend of Korra so far thoughts.
May. 18th, 2012 12:20 amBullet point style! Because I'm lazy and can't be bothered to write out a full post.
- Korra is awesome. Actually, everyone in the main four (er, Korra, Mako, Bolin and Tenzin that is) is awesome, but I don't think any of them would work as the main character except Korra. Just - dude, so much love for all of them. While I think Tenzin is my favourite, Iiii can't be sure, I like them all too much.
- I also love all the character dynamics. All of them. And I ship Mako/Korra! Inasmuch as I ship anyone in this. I'm not going to care much if they don't end up together. Favourite dynamic of all though is Tenzin-Korra, because they just compliment each other so well with this father-daughter thing they have going on.
- Asami, I am suspicious of you. I like you, but I'm suspicious of both you and your father - partly because your father is a rich industrialist and that never goes well (rich people are not known for also being well-balanced people), and partly because the 'I feel so safe with you' thing is weird. You've known Mako for maybe a few days. All you really know about him is that he's a professional kickboxer who can shoot fire from his body. Neither of these things particularly engender a feeling of safeness. Also, it's just an odd thing to say: Is there a specific threat you feel safe from, or is it just in general?
- Amon, I'm not buying what you're selling. I don't believe the 'firebender killed my family!' story - it seems too calculated. Of course you suffered some great tragedy to do with benders, of course said bender happened to be of a group that historically has been extremely violent to other nations, of course it happened in the course of your non-bender family being heroic and standing up to a bully, and it's not suspicious at all that this story is perfectly crafted to inspire both outrage and sympathy.
- It's also suspiciously similar to Mako's backstory. I mean, Amon couldn't know that, but if I was writing the series, that's the kind of thing I would do to set off the audience's 'something is awry' radars.
- Woo, energybending! Maybe. There's been some speculation that it's staged, but that doesn't make a great deal of sense: Why would those gangsters, and then those pro-benders, all of whom make their livings off bending, take part in a staged 'take my bending away' display? Not to mention, it seems pretty genuine, lack of a lightshow notwithstanding.
- Little details. Amon skips over a guy who's crying to someone else, presumably because he wants to avoid energybending the guy who might inspire sympathy in the audience until they're whipped into a fervor.
- Speaking of which, dear lord, every scene Amon is in is disturbing. Unpleasant connotations everywhere.
- Tarrlok, I don't trust you either. Not at all. Not even slightly. I think you're in league with Amon.
- Lin is awesome. Just completely awesome.
- Okay, in general, I really like the setting. Just - love it.
